Arezzo Christmas Markets (and More)

We’ve just returned from a weekend of Christmas celebration at the Arezzo Christmas Markets,—the annual Arezzo Città del Natale (Arezzo Christmas City) festival. Our stay also happened to coincide with the monthly Fiera Antiquaria di Arezzo (Arezzo Antique Fair). Here are all the highlights from our unforgettable weekend in Arezzo—how to get there, where to stay, what to eat, and how to soak up the city’s festive vibes!

Getting to Arezzo

Arezzo is incredibly well-connected, making it an easy addition to your Tuscan itinerary.

• 🚆 By Train: Direct trains from Florence and Siena make Arezzo a convenient day trip or weekend getaway. From Florence, the journey takes just under an hour, while Siena is about 90 minutes away. Arezzo’s train station is within walking distance of the historic center, so you won’t need a car.
• 🚗 By Car: Driving to Arezzo is straightforward, with plenty of parking options outside the city center. We parked at GabaIt’s about 75 km from Florence and 70 km from Siena, making it a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Staying in the Heart of Arezzo

Arezzo offers a variety of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets. From bed-and-breakfasts in historic buildings to boutique hotels and countryside villas, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a quiet stay in the medieval centre, a comfortable base for exploring, or a rural escape, Arezzo has you covered. Many options combine modern amenities with Tuscan character, offering a practical and enjoyable experience. Couples, families, and solo travellers will find plenty of choices to meet their needs.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: We recently stayed at Le Casate, a very comfortable one-bedroom apartment, on the first level of a historic building in Arezzo’s centro storico, making it an easy walk to the main attractions, restaurants and shopping. The Piazza Grande is just 300 metres away. Recently renovated, the apartment has all the modern comforts you would expect, with a well-equipped kitchenette, super comfy bed and very effective heating. It is a perfect retreat after a few hours exploring Arezzo in the winter chill. Michela and Marco, Le Casate’s hosts were very welcoming and provided helpful tips on where to dine and what to see. Arezzo Città del Natale: A Festive Wonderland

It was no coincidence that our visit coincided with the Arezzo Città del Natale, as we both love this time of year and jumped at the chance to see this renowned festival first hand. Arezzo transforms into a Christmas wonderland, with the Piazza Grande, the city’s iconic medieval square, being the centre of the festivities. Christmas lights, a giant Christmas tree, and wooden stalls sell everything from handcrafted ornaments to local delicacies created an enchanting atmosphere.

Exploring the Fiera Antiquaria di Arezzo

Once a month, Arezzo hosts its renowned Fiera Antiquaria, which stretches through the streets and laneways of the historic centre. The fair attracts vintage enthusiasts, collectors, and curious ‘window shoppers’ (like us) from all over Italy.

From jewellery and antique furniture to vintage postcards and quirky knick-knacks, the fair offers a glimpse into Italy’s past. Even if you’re not a collector, strolling through the market is an experience in itself, and an opportunity to soak up the atmosphere.

Where To Eat and Drink in Arezzo

The region of Arezzo is famous for its olive oil, beans, cheeses, honey, and meats like Valdarno chicken and Chianina beef. Cold cuts like Capocollo and Finocchiona sre popular as well. Colli Aretini is the local wine, and to finish an evening, cantuccini—crunchy almond biscuits are served with Vin Santo. For something hearty, try the ribollita, a rustic soup of bread, vegetables, and beans. Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a juicy T-bone steak, is also a popular dish, especially given that Arezzo is located in the Val di Chiana, the steak capital of Tuscany.

Arezzo may be known for its culinary traditions, but it’s also offers up a few surprises. During our stay, we decided to venture beyond the classics and explore the city’s modern dining scene. We discovered two places that perfectly blend local flavours with a contemporary twist. These two spots were the definite standouts. over the weekend.

Rabbit Rabbit Bistro: A breakfast oasis in a country where mornings often mean just coffee and a pastry, Rabbit Rabbit Bistro is a rare find. This cosy spot in the centro storico serves up a mix of Italian and international favourites. I couldn’t resist the Pistacchio Pancakes, homemade pancakes, generously topped with pistachio cream. Julie went for the Cali eggs—scrambled to perfection and paired with avocado, confit cherry tomatoes, mixed greens, sesame seeds, and toast. Both dishes were fresh, flavourful, and beautifully presented. And the coffee? The rich, creamy cappuccinos reminded us of our favourite cafes in our (other) home city of Adelaide.

The bistro has a relaxed vibe, really friendly staff, and a modern, yet cosy atmosphere. Rabbit Rabbit Bistro delivers a proper breakfast experience that’s often hard to find in Italy. We’re already looking forward to returning the next time we’re in Arezzo! Add it to your list—you won’t regret it!

Its lively atmosphere is obviously a favourite with locals, who gather outside, sharing a drink and a chat, even in the brisk chill of winter. The staff are super friendly, creating a warm and relaxed vibe. Fantastic value and an unbeatable menu. This spot is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy a delicious snack and a drink without breaking the bank!

Staying in the centro storico was definitely a bonus. It put us right in the heart of the action. And when our feet needed a rest or in this case, we needed to thaw out, we returned to the apartment for a quick recharge before venturing out again. There are so many great dining spots throughout this lovely city, so you definitely wont go hungry! And with easy access from Florence and Siena, Arezzo should be a must-visit for anyone touring Tuscany.
